New Samurai Concept
Well the title is enough to explain the topic; I just wanted to tinker with the concept of a samurai class, some concepts and background. I'm sure some of you have more insight on actual Samurai background and legend so fell free to contribute.
As of the next expansion we will have 2 melee jobs and 6 caster/ranged jobs, so I don't feel the melee market is saturated. Most of us know warrior but have limited insight as too all the roles assassin fills, so trying to depict a role for samurai without overlapping those may be difficult, but we can just start with the concept if A.net approves then I'm sure they will go on with it.
My choice weapons for Samurai are Spear and Katana, those are the most renound weapons for Samurai, along with the bow, but we know why that’s taken. Someone who wants to play a bow samurai can easily combine Samurai with Ranger. Assassin introduced dual daggers, but it still doesn't let players dual wield weapons of choice, one handed weapons in particular. So I think 3 good secondary attributes would be Katana, Spear, and Dual Wield (title not withstanding).
Warrior fills a role of damage absorber and normal attack types; so far he is the only one to make good use of weapon and shield, so warrior is more like a damage/defense character. So far what I've seen of Assassin is a chaser/combination attack class. Most of the dagger and some of the deadly art skills are interchangeable and dependant parts of combination attacks, which together make for momentary damage increase without exactly being spikes. The other part of Assassin seems to be teleporting around and such to chase and escape combat. So I'm trying to think of different means of attack then these, some things naturally overlap, like moves that incur deep wound, cripple, bleeding.
I think samurai armor should be the same AR grade as Assassin, energy mods and regen are one of those things which depend on the jobs skill costs, it could be like warrior or it could be like a mage.... I think it would be interesting if Samurai armor could use the Damage absorption runes, either warriors, or a set of their own.
For Samurai attribute I think a good primary would be Accuracy. Warrior has Strength which adds armor penetration on all attacks, Assasin has increased criticals and energy for criticals. For Samurai I think Accuracy is even a good skill, this is a skill which gives a chance to strike the enemy no matter what skill he is using or what status is on you. For each point in Accuracy Samurai attacks have a 2% chance of hitting regardless (of Stances, Enchantments, Conditions or Hexes). This is a 2-24(32)% chance of hitting regardless. If 2% isn't enough then it could be 3%, that may seem like a lot, but this kind of skill only really goes into effect when certain conditions are inflicted, primarily blind, I think 2.5% per point is good though. This may be a crappy attribute in early levels, but in PvP it is an amazing attribute, Mesmers have the same kind of effectiveness (more powerful in PvP than PvE). The skills here could be diverse, some defensive, some offensive, kind of like expertise with the multifunctional skill line up for its primary. As a nice eye candy, attacks which get the accuracy kick could trigger a faster swing or jab animation signifying an attack improved by accuracy.
For Katana, the attribute obviously increases katana damage and chance of critical as well as increases damage of katana skills. Katana being a 2 handed weapon. But the kind of attacks the katana provides is what is important. With a Katana the natural scheme of attack is to attack slowly but surely, so the strike would be the same speed and damage as hammers. The katana attribute could have skills which allow for quick interception, causing the samurai to make a dash towards the enemy (just a little) when executing certain skills. It could also have elemental strikes which alter the damage to different elements. It could have skills which jump into the air and slash onto the target, causing knockdown if it is blocked. I think the damage and cost of katana skills should be high. Similar to necromancer who sacrifices health and energy to do certain powerful spells, I think Katana skills, or samurai skills in general should be adrenaline based, energy based, and a combination of both. A powerful attack would cost energy and adrenaline to execute, particularly ones which did damage and movement, like Jump attacks, Longer Dash attacks, or just plain powerful attacks.
Spears used to be the weapon of choice for a Samurai, so I think this would be a good class for Spear wielding. The usual increases damage and critical of spear attacks and spear related skills. The spear is a good long range melee weapon, and unlike any of the current melee weapons I think spears should reach further allowing Spear Wielders to attack enemies from a longer distance, about a whole character space. Spear attacks could hit at the same speed as a 2 handed weapon should. Spear attacks would lean more toward multi hit skills, with a few heavy hit skills, this helps spear wielders deal effective damage vs. enemies which have protective spirit or Union, multiple weak hits will deal more damage, but suffer more from 'damage reduction defenses' which reduce base damage received. This attribute could also include a lot of adjacent and AoE attacks where the Wielder spins his spear around him. A good elite skill would be a stance which causes the wielder to spin his spear for adjacent or AoE damage at each attack interval for a given period of time.
Dual Wield is more complicated, because it revolves around other weapons, since any other weapon does more damage based on that weapons attribute, that's not included. If you have any points in dual wield you can use certain weapons in each hand, they don't particularly have to be 1 handed, like katana is 2 handed, but it is held in 2 hands because of the attack style, not the weight of the weapon. Dual wield allows you to wield Katana, Swords, and Axes (other acceptable weapons could be added in the future). This allows many warriors out there the opportunity to dual wield, as well as Samurai to dual Wield Katana. Dual wielding could have its own attack sequence which balances the damage dealt with 2 weapons. A weapon normally hits in a pattern such as this '1,1,1,1,continue' one being the single weapon they use, for a dual wielding the attack interval would be '1,2,1 and 2, skip'. In this way the dual Wielder gets the same amount of hits a single wielder does, but at different intervals. The skip can come before or after the dual attack, whichever is deemed more balanced. Increased points in Dual Wielding increase the attack speed by 1 or 2 percent, whatever is deemed balanced compared to weapon mastery damage improvements. In this way a samurai can increase his damage output using katana by putting points in katana attribute and dual wield attribute. Wile accuracy can improve damage output, it is more like a passive cure blind/overcome block attribute. As for Dual Wield skills many of them would be adjacent and maybe AoE attacks. This could also include many stances which alter the attack pattern to deal damage wile blocking, or sacrifice attacks to block attack for each attack interval if attacked, or something of that nature. Because Dual Wield should function naturally with all weapons associated, both should be held upright, Warriors shouldn’t wield swords underhand and Assassin is already doing the underhanded bit.
Well that’s what I came up with for Samurai, if you like this and want to help you could develop some skill types with me, or just comment, but please no skill lists, oh boring. Pictures, folklore, obscure samurai facts, all welcome. I don’t have anything against other samurai concepts, but please make your own thread if your going to make a full samurai concept of your own.
I want to include some of my recent Samurai ideas, here is a link.

Sorry, this is just a copy. Whether you like it or not, over half the samurai Threads in the guild hall are made by you, that's why you got the referance.
It's sad that you will bring up a topic then act ashamed of it.
